I have known Flore for over 15 years since serving on the Florida Commission on the Status of Women with her. She is an energetic, engaging and outspoken advocate! She is a collaborative leader that is able to work with diverse points of view.
I have known Dr Latortue for over a decade now. She has always been a constant proponent in the south Florida community. She impacts the community through her organization, radio show and involvement.
However, I would like to tell you who Dr Latortue has been to me. Being a young college student looking to get involved in the community you face a lot of rejection, obstacles and challenges. It can be very disheartening at times. There are certain people who come into your life who serve as a blessing. Like a second mother, guardian angel, advocate and supporter. Dr. Flore Latortue has supported me selflessly since the beginning of my journey. It has been a refreshing and assuring relationship. She is grooming the next generation of leaders. I am proud to be amongst the plethora of lives she has positively impacted!
I would not have accomplished anything without her help. We have held the March for Education with her support. This past year we were able to have Dr. Eric Thomas attend and be the keynote speaker. I founded the Foundation of the World September 9th, 2009. We have impacted thousands of lives domestically and abroad. I would not have been able to do any of these things without her help. Early on she gave the support, confidence, access and resources to move forward.
I believe she would be the ideal candidate for the school board. She would bring more public/private partnerships. She would bring more involvement from the community. Most importantly, she would raise the next generation of leaders and future success stories! She has my unconditional support!
Now it is time for her to lend that voice to our children and parents for Miami Dade County Schools.
Dr. Marie Flore Latortue is unequivocally a prime candidate for the Miami Dade School Board for the following reasons.
She is the quintessential humanitarian, whereby her desires as a parent to innately desire the best for her children, she wonderfully and generously desires the same for all of children.
Dr. Latortue has an extensive track record of wearing several hats of community activism, business development, educational leadership, social empowerment, media engagement, and being a leading voice for all voiceless and disenfranchised groups.
Lastly, with South Florida being an international multilingual microcosm, Dr. Latorue’s multilingual heritage gives her an added layer of appropriateness for the Miami Dade School Board. With this special characteristic, she is compelled to remain consistently culturally sensitive to the very diverse student body of the county.
Since 2007 I heard about Marie Flore Lindor Latortue. I saw her at all the Haitian events and saw her interact with everyone: Haitian, Hispanic, Black American, Jamaican, African (Nigerian), you name it. Per nature, I am not someone who is going to push herself to get people’s attention. I watched her closely in the community. Every time Fanm or any organization is talking, raking the road, or is going to Tallahassee/Washington to defend a cause, Dr. Flore Lindor Latortue is always there. When it comes to children, youth or as a matter of fact human beings in general, Dr. Flore takes a stand. Anyone who loves children is my friend because they see them as future, and we need to be their voices.
In 2010, we had our first Commissioner elected, Commissioner Jean Monestime who later became Chairman of the Dade County Commission. During this time, I Met Dr. Flore in community events organized by Commissioner Jean Monestime’s office. I was there minding my own business and heard a soft and powerful laughter close to me. I turned my head and saw a young lady smiling and she said: “Ti pitit, you cannot be around us at this time. Dr. Dufresney and a lot of powerful Haitians were there such as our Queen Farah Juste, you cannot isolate yourself like that.” Before I said anything, we were taking pictures and her words were: “You are young, our job is to make sure that you are comfortable enough to come and meet the people.” In my mind I said that I am older than that Lady and she allowed my baby face to fool her. And she asked me: “Do you know who I am?”, and I replied: “I know who you are, you are Doctor Flore.”
Since any events organized by me are for the school I was working at, I did not have to invite her three months in advance because a simple phone call to her allows her to say yes to being there for the kids. She is always talking to my parents, the kids at the school and at my church as well. If you ask me why I support her as a candidate for the school board, I will say this: “She will bring a breath of fresh air to the place where people do not see the kids as anymore than cash cows.” Dr. Marie Flore Lindor Latortue will be a great advocate for the kids in general and will make sure that the students get the proper tools to succeed. She will also work with everyone at the table to make sure that the students of Dade County do not lack anything as well as the students of her constituency. I support her not because she is my mentor and friend, but because I worked in a school close to twenty years and did not like the way the people at the school board treated some students. As a mother, a tax payer and someone who has worked with schools for more than nineteen years, we need someone who really cares and will make a difference in those students’ lives. “No child will be left behind.”
I am Eugenise Mompremier.
